Gabby: “Court, can I borrow your wave?”
Me: “My what?”
Gabby: “Your wave.”
Me: “Well I’m sure you can borrow it but I don’t actually know what you’re talking about.”
Gabby: “You know….like..erm…hum..*thinks for a little bit* not an oven…a wave.”
Me: “A microwave??”
Gabby: “Yes!”
Patricia: “Marjo, can I borrow your…*makes motion like sharpening a pencil* Courtney, what is this in English?”
Me: “A pencil sharpener.”
Marjo: “You call it a pen sharpener? How boring!”
Me: “lol. Pencil sharpener.”
Marjo: “Still boring.”
Me: “Who won the game??” (hockey game Finland against Denmark)
Marjo: “We won!!” (Finland)
Me: “Congrats!!”
Marjo: “Thanks. I did so much for this victory!”
One of my teachers: “What I’m about to change will make your life harder. Of course – that’s why I’m here!”
Marjo: “One of the styeriotypes we have of Americans is that they all carry a gun and wear those big hats.”
Me: “Cowboy hats? Like in the wild west movies?”
Marjo: “yes.”
Me: “Sorry to disappoint you but I don’t have a gun or a cowboy hat.”
Marjo: “What?? I’m glad about the gun but you don’t wear those hats?? *very disappointed look* That’s so sad…”
Marjo: “We’re not used to foreigners in Finland. If someone comes there we’re like “why are you here?? There’s so many other places you could go!”
Me: “How do you say happy birthday in Finnish?”
Marjo: “Hyvaa Syntymapaivaa!”
Me: “yeeeeeah…you’re gonna have to write that one down.”
