Just a normal Wednesday

Today we had our economics class and also a lecture/speech we had to attend on EU in the world. Our class was required to attend but I think several others were too because it was a fairly large audience. Our econ professor gave the speech and towards the end came to the discussion on Turkey entering the EU. He knew I’d studied in Turkey because we’d talked about it earlier this semester and so he randomly stops and was like “Courtney, you studied in Turkey. Give us a short speech, like 3 or 5 minutes on Turkey and the EU.” I was like “Say whaaa? Is he talking to me?” Yeah I guess he was. That was awkward. Not so much that I had to give a speech I wasn’t expecting or that I didn’t know the information because I did, but more that how in the world was I suppose to sum up such a big discussion in 3 – 5 minutes with students who most of which didn’t know much or anything about Turkey except that it’s a Muslim country. Afterwards the professor talked for about 10minuets on the subject but I disagreed with most of what he said. I do think Turkey has made great progress, but not as much as he was stressing. For example take the Kurds. He was saying that because of trying to enter the EU Turkey has given the Kurds so many rights. Before they couldn’t speak in Kurdish or have their Kurdish newspapers or be on the radio speaking Kurdish and now they can. I wanted to be like “yeah to some extent. They are now allowed to speak Kurdish on the radio for an hour. Wooho!” lol yes there is a lot of progress that has been done but I still think they have a ways to go personally. But yes I’ll shut up about that because I’d keep talking about it.
This afternoon when I got back James was home and we got into a big discussion about both of our countries' government systems, how money is used, our countries' debt, etc. Yes, yes, a very IR type of conversation, sorry :P but James is an intern at the hospital here in Angers so it was interesting to hear it from him. (He’s from England)
So yep. Just a normal Wednesday.
